Our Year of Adventure
With most people leaving the cabin yesterday, we had the bedroom which isolates you from the dormlike noise. Without hearing any snores or people shifting in their sleep, we slept really well and were surprised that we hadn't woken once during the night.
We were just going to have a relaxing day. The temperature had risen to -13c which although cold, is considered warm and with the warm weather comes the snow and the wind.
The thermostat in the underfloor heating was broken so we'd had to switch it off last night and despite it being 15c warmer outside, we could feel the chill in the cabin. David lit a fire in hearth to heat the cabin up.
The remainder of the morning and the daylight hours of the afternoon were spent watching television and reading before we donned on warm clothes for a walk. We went down to the village and had a look round the shops, David is keen to buy a jacket, either bright blue or bright orange. There is plenty of choice in the shop too except David always seems to gravitate towards jackets that cost in excess of €400 (about NZ $650) so they end up staying on the rail.
The snow was falling quite heavily and David decided to clear the snow from the car and the driveway before it got too deep. It was only a few centimetres deep, but when you have to clear an area of about 7 metres by 12 metres, it's actually a lot of snow (do the maths).
Maria made some warm sandwiches for dinner and then David went out to the Äkäslompolo Sauna & Beer Club with Timo. Local men get to use the sauna and the ice hole between 7-8pm every Monday so they are all used to a very, very hot sauna. The ice hole, however, gives the body respite with regular dips in the freezing water (David went in 3 times). It is obligatory to also drink cold beer during the sauna just to make sure you remain hydrated. After the sauna, everyone heads to the nearby Selvä Pyy for beer club part of the evening. We were given a Finnish IPA, a Danish APA and finally a trappist monk beer. The first two were nice, but the last beer was weird, really strong and tasted of bananas so we decided to have a couple of Fullers winter ale's afterwards to take the taste out our mouths.
While David was out, Maria was finishing off creating photo books from a few years ago.
