Our Year of Adventure
Lonely Planet advised having breakfast in Cafe El Cafeto because it served 100% organic Ecuadorian coffee so we decided to give it a try. There were a lot of locals in a the high ceilinged cafe who were either eating or ordering breakfast, which gave us a good feeling about the place. It took ages for our breakfast to arrive at the table but it was nice enough apart from Maria's healthy fruit and granola being served with whipped cream instead of yogurt.
We got talking to an English couple, at the next table, who had already travelled through South America and got some good tips from them. We talked to them for ages and and it was lunchtime by the time we left.
The replacement ATM card arrived in Quito (the old one was skimmed in Colombia) and fortunately worked first time, we will have some cash to take with us to Galapagos tomorrow.
We took the tram bus to Ejido, an area just north of where we are staying that has a park popular with locals on Saturdays. Walking through park we came across a large crowd being entertained by a guy doing comedy and dance routine. We might have watched for longer but David didn't get the jokes being told in Spanish. There was a small market in one corner of the park but we didn't need a woolen hat or poncho just yet.
After grabbing an ice cream in KFC we wandered up towards La Mariscal and Plaza Yeah, party central for the tourists. There were bars and clubs everywhere but when we went to have a beer, we walked away because we couldn't bear to pay $5 a bottle, 3 times more than what we would pay in the old town.
We walked back towards the park and decided to eat at KFC. Fast food stores are a cop-out but food in Ecuador is pretty bland and mostly deep fried anyway so a chicken burger and some hot wings didn't seem to bad an option.
Back at the hotel, we settled the hotel bill and packed our stuff for the early start in morning. David finished his packing quickest and went for few beers in the Happy Monday Cafe at Calle Ronda. They were even showing Mexican football on the TV.
