Our Year of Adventure
It was freezing in the morning when we woke up so we stayed in bed, keeping warm under all the blankets, for as long as possible without risking missing out on breakfast. The breakfast of coffee, juice, eggs and bread was a standard affair although the bread rolls did seem more like scones.
The sun was coming out to take the edge of the cold so we decided to skip the 10am ferry back to Copacabana in favor of the afternoon one and half day more on the island.
We checked out at 10am and walked the remainder of the track into Yumani, the main village in the south of the island. We were too early in the day to pay the Bs.5 charge. Our walk continued through the village towards the south of the island to see ruins. It was hard to see exactly where they were and it would have been a steep downhill walk to discover more. Given that it would also involve a steep walk back uphill we decided to give it a miss.
Instead, we walked back to the village and took a wander through the northern end. There were no roads in the village, only narrow, stony paths between houses which added to its charm. We were surprised at the number of donkeys in and around the village, taking a guess every family must own more than one donkey. In addition to the donkeys, there were heaps of pigs and sheep in back yard pens. One house even had a llama.
We walked down the hill towards the village church but it was closed so we continued down the rough, uneven path towards the dock. A couple of times on our walk down we had to step aside to let donkeys past. A donkey train on the way up had a sheep in tow and we wondered if the sheep thought it was a donkey or they were just friends. Another, unaccompanied, group of donkeys made their way down at speed with total disregard for whoever might be on the path. Turns out that we took the donkey path instead of the nice tourist steps we saw later.
There was three hours to kill before the ferry so we waited in sun for an hour reading our books before seeking shade in a cafe with a couple of cold ones.
We managed to take an earlier ferry at 3pm. It was still sunny but cold enough on the deck for a windproof jacket. The boat made good time and we were back in Copacabana within 90 minutes. We checked in to Hostel La Cupula, got our bags from the storage and the clean laundry within minutes and dropped it all in our room.
We tried to get a table at the hostel restaurant but it was fully booked so we went back to the Italian. The pasta wasn't amazing the last time we went so we decided to try the pizzas. The vegetarian and the ham pizzas were both really good with heaps of cheese and nice, crispy base.
