We'll travel anywhere to escape Brexit
Clickity clack, clickity clack; we are awoken after a good nights sleep at 6 am by the sound of the Super Express 9 heading towards Chiang Mai. We grab a cab and detour the city and head straight for the airport.
After a short hop over the mountains on Kan Air (small propeller plane) we landed in Mae Hong Son our home for the next four nights. Quickly through the airport we exited where we thought we had negotiated well when our driver agreed to a Baht 60 fare from the airport to our guesthouse. However, our eyes were opened to how small Mae Hong Son really is when we arrive at our destination Sarm Mork Guesthouse 3 minutes later.
Mae Hong Son is the capital city of this large province but is small and quaint with a population of just 7,000; the remainder living high up in the mountains.
The area is famous for it's minority people and hill tribes which is what we are here for. Although this city is primarily a base for hill tribe trekking it has endeared itself to us. The people are gentle, the town is easy to navigate and it's jewel in the crown is the lakeside Wat Chong Kam which is a 200 year old Burmese style temple with a backdrop of the majestic mountains that take you're breath away at any time of day.
After a scout around and a chat with a few trekking companies we book a 3 day 2 night trek starting tomorrow with Pordee an enthusiastic guide.
A mooch around the small town, a bite to eat, pack our small rucksacks with just the essentials are followed by an early night as we need to conserve all our energy for tomorrow.............

karenhym Exciting times (again!). Will look forward to your reports on Myanmar as we might be going there! Enjoy. x
david142 Hi Karen, we're not going to Myanmar - bad infrastructure so not enough time to get from place to place. We are doing the next best thing and trekking in Mae Hong Son which boarders Myanmar and has a lot of Burmese influence. x
