So we left Flores and headed to a town called Rio Dulce which is just off the caribbean coast. Again we weren't expecting much from this place as a tropical storm had just passed, how wrong can you be?
Its very appealing, especailly to American yacht owners (as its the safest place in the caribbean during hurricane season - not to mention cheap!). Our accomodation again was on the river which was warm and safe to swim in. The restaurant overlooked the swimming platforms and at night we watched the storms on the coast from safe distance. Its so beautiful to watch a lightning storm from a distance.
Our rooms were also great, bungalows set back from the lake with numerous visitors including ducks, cats, a huge dog, tropical (orange) frogs and even the occassional scorpian and cockroach. This is definately the most luxurious place we have stayed in so far. The tour guide for the hotel was also very funny, a native spanish speaker we didn't need translating due to his wonderful arm movements - our fav's were the horse riding option where he imitated an old Monty Python sketch - Funny!
These 2 days were mainly spent chilling out with the occassional swim in the river. We have also tried some of the local specialities (as Yana has told us too :-)) including rice and Beans, some traditional soups, and many other dishes which involves corn and mainly chicken.
The locals are also very friendly and hospitable - nothing like what we thought - its been quite easy even with limited Spanish.
Another suprise for us in Guatemala. This country is proving to be somewhat of a great experience.
Off to Antgua tomorrow
p.s. We have made som good friends in the Australians travelling with us, called Ang and Drew, and their sister Lucy. Hopefully we will see them when we are in Sydney.
