So we reluctantly left Monteverde and started the trip to La Fortuna which is only about a 3 minute flight but took us 3-4 hours because if the crazy winding roads!
Some sensational views though.
We entered a lake and took a boat to the other side of the bigeest lake in Costa Rica. THe cool thing about this lake is not only does it give a place for the native alligators to chill out, it also has the best view of teh Arenal Volcano - the most active in Costa Rica.
Unfortuantely for us, we were destined to see no Lava or erruptions from this legendary beast.
La Fortuna used to be called something else but when the Volcano fully errupted in the 60's it spilt the other way and destroyed another town instead. So they aptly called this one Fortuna... quite a cool little story we thought!
Anyhow our one single mission was to see some Lava as we hadnt yet although we had seen some great volcano views. Arenal unfortuanetly was coated in cloud for the vast majority of our stay :-(. We did however get to see smoke from the crater one morning at 5am which was a very cool sight.
Anyhow the highlight of our stay in La Fortuna was a trip to the Baldi Hot springs - Volcanic rocks heat these magnificent pools to temperatures higher than the average bath. So the hotel has harnessed this into a range of pools which are simply awesome. Some of the pools even have slides - it was like being a kid again. It was also to our suprise that the food here for $5 was the best buffet we have had for a long while! This was simply the coolest thing you could do at night in La Fortuna.
Our tour of Central America comes to an end tomorrow in San Jose, but we have seen some great things on this route and will return to a few of the places we have been. We have also made some fantastic friends in Ange and Drew who we are travelling to Panama with, and Renee, Maggie, Brian, Vlad and Eomon we are both in contact with over the wonder that is social networking.
