Would you stay here - Glen Helen Resort ( Last Resort ) ? - Tuesday 16th October 2012
This is the grumpy Intrepids doing battle with a Caravan Park again, blog. The scenery and other places we saw on this part of our trip were too good to mix in with the disgusting state of the Caravan Park. Without putting enough thought into it we booked in for 3 nights at what is very loosely called the Glen Helen Resort, we have renamed it the Glen Helen Last Resort. I even took the time to Photoshop the entry statement as you will see in the photos.
After we had booked in and paid we went to look at the facilities. Camp kitchen a disaster area. Ablutions and showers disgusting with toilet bowls full of floaters , no groceries of any kind for sale and everything else very very expensive. Unleaded $2.16 a litre. We really did not do our homework on this one. At least there was grass where we set up our tent under the only tree available which would give us shade for a short period each day.
We did enjoy our day trip out from here but in the end decided to leave one day early even though we had paid. They stopped selling the basic pies and burgers and all meals had to be purchased in the expensive restaurant.
On return to Alice Springs what do Intrepids do? Find the right Government departments and put in a health and safety report. Took a bit of time riding around town following the trail of Government Departments who either handballed as it was not their jurisdiction or they had moved to another building. Finally with a very nice chat to two members of the NT Environmental Health Department and armed with the email address of a guy from Tourism NT we headed back to camp to send off a string of emails to the relevant departments and the owners of the Glen Helen Resort. We had not said anything to them out there as we were totally reliant on them for our food and wondered what would be in the food if we aired our complaints.
The response from the owners was as predictable as the response we had in Winton about the messy park. The response from the Government Departments was great. A lot of people stop at these unsatisfactory parks then move on quickly the next day. Intrepids try to make a difference.
Dave the Determined.
