Sunday was a travel day and our last experience of driving on the wrong side of the road. We had a light breakfast and chatted with our host Marie between packing and tidying. It had felt quite a privilege to share her quirky collections for a few days and without any breakages. We said our goodbyes and off we went into the traffic which wasn't heavy at first but did build up towards Boston.
In fact, the driving started to demand more concentration after a lunch stop as it poured with rain and we started to navigate towards our hotel which was located very close to the highway. The navigation problem was that there was a maze of local roads running under and next to the highway and it was impossible to follow our Google Map print out with any certainty. It turned out we'd only taken one turn off too soon but this resulted in an impromptu city tour before we picked our way back to the roads we recognised and found the hotel at our second attempt.
The impromptu tour did mean that we were better orientated and had no trouble finding the hire car drop off. We then decided to wander Boston centre to while a way an hour or two before dinner. We called in at the Tourist Information Office with a simple query. "What can we do that's interesting around here for an hour or two now in the rain?" The response was a surprising one that roughly went, "Well the art gallery closes soon so there isn't much really. It's not great round here." So not a great promotion of Boston!
We decided to walk towards the harbour but changed our minds as Macy's seemed quite inviting given the rain so we idled away an hour experiencing this well-know department store. It was much like any department store in the UK and on the whole sold the same brands. However, the sale prices offered some good deals and we both bought bargains, Dave a shirt and Jill a couple of long-sleeved t-shirts.
Time killed we were ready to eat and took Marie's advice to try Legal Seafood. This is a chain so we were a little reticent but it looked sufficiently tempting for us to give it a try as we didn't have the will to search out anywhere better in the rain. The nearest LS was large and fully booked but they did direct us to a nearby branch after first phoning through a reservation for us. Our first experience of Boston hospitality and interest in helping visitors, a contrast to the employed Tourist Information worker, was the restaurant manager walking outside with us for half a block to show us the route to their sister business. We were impressed! Legal Seafood turned out to be a good choice as we both enjoyed crab cakes followed by swordfish for Jill and a seafood bake for Dave.
