We decided that following our dismal lighthouse viewing of yesterday that we should make amends today so headed off to Nauset Beach Light where we knew we could get four (or more accurately two) lighthouses for our efforts. Nauset Beach Light is the currently functioning lighthouse but just half a mile inland are the Three Sisters Lighthouses that used together to form the lighthouse operating at Nauset Beach. This was in the days before unique flashing patterns were available in a single light and the number of lights was a locator for ships at sea. These wooden structures have been moved inland to protect them from coastal erosion but they do look a little lost in their woodland setting.
The weather today was much warmer than the previous day and whilst we started out in grey skies the clouds were clearing and we enjoyed a lovely afternoon sitting and walking on the beaches from Nauset Beach Light, South towards Nauset and North to Marconi Beach. And you'll be relieved to know eating lunch on the beach! As ever we found we had long stretches of beach to ourselves once we'd walked any distance from the car park!
We had a fascinating afternoon watching the seals that were feeding and swimming alongside these sandy beaches. We've never seen so many seals so close to the shore. There must have been around a hundred in various groups along the length of this coastline all feeding about 10-20 yards from the shore. We think this was a mixture of Harbour and Harp Seals. Some that we assume to have been large males were so tall that their back flippers were out of the water when they were inverted feeding on the bottom. It was a funny sight and one that looked just as though they had performed a handstand so that they could dance to 'YMCA' with their back flippers! We may have the time and inclination to set a video clip to music: we'll see.
And all too soon we needed to leave to get back to take Marie out for dinner to thank her for her hospitality. Marie had booked us into a local bistro that had an early dinner fixed price three course menu that included a glass of wine which turned out to be both good value and lovely. We seemed to have acquired a taste for cocktails so began our meal with Blood Orange Martinis, Jill learning from Marie to ask for the ice from the cocktail shaker on the side, mmmmm, delicious!
