Rio Dulce was short and sweet, what we saw was from the bus window and the last boat to livingstone for the day was literally waiting for us, so we all jumped on and took a very scenic 2 hour boat ride through dense jungle and canyons. So after an early night, after watching a horror movie in our room we get up early and hit the trail early. Our mini bus arrived at 7am and it's a long ride to Champey. There are numerous villages around the lagoon, all at the base of various live volcanoes. Each village has it's own specific vibe.. We chose a relaxed, chilled party kinda place which sees a lot of long term visitors book into one of the many Spanish language schools. It's easy to see why, the place is gorgeous and the vibe is great. Heaps of expats have settled here for near permanent periods. We even found some Brooklyn brewery IPA.. Yum. So Antigua is quaint, kind of like a Guatemala version of Oaxaca. After an afternoon of flying we shared a cab with a nice chap from Seattle and got out of Guatemala City, we heard it wasn't worth seeing and in the way out we could see why. Can't believe there live of fast food, huge places, even a Taco Bell... Weird.. Anyway an hour or so later we arrive to cobblestone streets everywhere and lots of great coffee and amazing chocolate.
