We left Adelaide for the Flinders ranges just north of the City, we have been very lucky to have a group already formed, but the new guys seem cool.
So day one we hiked a dry river which was really cool, like exploring the ancient site with gorges and natural remains. The weather here has definitely gone up a notch or two, seems like hiking in the dry heat. Our new tour guide is called Rachel and she’s really down to earth, funny and cool. On the way down she pointed out 3 mini tornados that were happening in the dust bowls around us. I have always wanted to see one of these; they call them Willie Willies in this part of the country. Not too strong but enough force to flip a car! How cool, I have seen a Tornado! We also went on a hike to see some aboriginal rock art, again in the middle of nowhere, its funny how these people could survive this long in such conditions. The art work is very simplistic, with animals and finger paintings but still fascinating. I learnt that they are the world’s oldest race of people!
Now the first night stay was at a place called Parachilna, population 8.
We got to know the group a lot better when we were here, Adam and Lucy are great couple from the UK, Andre a cocktail barman from Italy (definitely bought a charm and comedic genius to the group!) and two German girls, Tanja and Mary are really sweet.
So here we were told that the longest train in the world passes every night at 11, so we stood on the platform waiting!!!!! And waiting… in the end we waited for 2 hours for this bloody train which never came…how stupid did we feel. However the night was packed with comedy, with numerous sighting of the train that was never to arrive!
The sky around here is gorgeous. I saw 3 shooting stars in the space of an hour…simply stunning. Same wish every time…but that would be telling now wouldn’t it…
