Now this was where the experience really started, enroute to Coober Pedy. Another early start, our first stop was a huge salt lake in the middle of nowhere. Now I know I have said the middle of nowhere before in these journals, but now I mean it! There is nothing out here, no civilization at all. Just desert, not like sandy desert just flat plains with virtually no trees, just little bushes dotted here and there. The lake was cool though, mainly because it wasn’t a lake at all, it was all the salt that the seas that used to be in this area had left behind. So literally we were standing on a huge plain of white salt! There was also a sign in the salt which said that the military used to use the area for “testing”. Just don’t ask feels like I have entered the twilight zone. There maybe landmines underneath my feet but hey…It was a beautiful sight though. Anyhow temperature hit 46 today, 46 that is absolutely criminal. Lucky we have air-conditioning. The drive was long and pretty uneventful, but Rachel our driver was determined to hit Coober Pedy before dark. We succeeded. Now if I have ever said anything about the Twilight Zone it is this place!
It’s an Opal mining town in the centre of the desert, and everyone lives underground… sounds funny hey; you haven’t heard the best of it. They have limited law, make explosives, people go missing, and they don’t pay taxes… it’s a criminal hide away I tell you now. Everyone is a bit nuts here. Our hostel was underground, which was so cool (in both senses!). Words can not put this place in perspective, believe me. That’s why we went Opal mining, and for Pizza…strange hey. Unfortunately I didn’t find my fortune, but the mining was funny. Adam and I were just in hysterics most of the time, added to by the amount of beer, lack of sleep and heat. Then onto a underground bar, such a good night, Tanja proved herself a dancing legend, as did Adam with guy moves indescribable!
We also were told that Pitch Black was filmed here, I love that movie and I got to see one of the spaceships, beer in hand…say cheese!
This is certainly the weirdest place I have ever been to, but such a good craic as my Irish counterparts would say!
