Blog Day 45 Mon 20th June 2011
As we have a car, all be it a matchbox, we head out again to make the most of the game driving, the safaris are just far too expensive & you can see just as much in a car. We are hoping to see at least the rest of the big five today as we’ve only crossed off Elephant & Rhino so far. We come across the Baboons on the way in again this time they are sitting there scratching their nuts completely oblivious to us watching them. The big one that we really want to see are the Lions of course. We head into the park, drive about 100m up the road and we are treated to the most amazing site. 2 huge male lions are walking right towards us! We quickly wind the windows up and they split, walking either side of the car. One of them disappears into the long grass and the other one walks about 5m from the car. Another massive male Lion then comes into view following the other two. It too walks straight past our car, it’s expression is cold and we can just see death in its eyes. 2 Giraffes are hiding behind the trees in the distance & they are dead still, slowly looking around, the lions are headed in the grass in their direction, we can’t see them but maybe they can, everyone else disappears but we turn off the engine & wind down the windows, we can hear them but fail to see them & it doesn’t look like there’s going to be any type of kill luckily for the Giraffe, this does however unfortunately mean we don’t see much more on our drive this morning all the animals have disappeared not that we blame them. We head back & after speaking to the managers of the safari game drives we manage to score ourselves a free night drive. Unfortunately we don’t see much on the night drive either, some Rhino, a Jackal, some Hares, a small cat, Impala, Kudu which we hadn’t seen yet & later find out tastes scrumptious, give the driver his credit he is looking out & seeing all the tiny stuff but he can’t see any huge stuff which is a shame. It’s literally freezing cold outside also & were out for almost 3 hrs. On the way back we manage to see a rhino really close to the truck, Its hard enough trying to spot these animals in the day let alone at night. When we get back we do our now famous cheese & veggie sarnies with some steak, by the time we get the fire going it’s almost 10 so it’s a late one.
