Day 40-44 in the world of Sam and Dani:
We got on the boat to Koh Phangan and were abit jubious as to whether it would actually go.. Q. How many people can you fit on one boat? A. As many as there are waiting!
When we arrived at our resort we were very impressed! This was one of the things we booked through an agent in Bangkok so it was alot better than hostels we've been staying in. The first night we sat in our porch having some drinks then went and made some friends at the bar. The following day we made the most of the sun and had a pure lazy day. In the evening alot more people arrived to the resort so we went and had some drinks before the pool party. We became good friends with 2 girls from Scotland (Aimee and Faye) and another 3 (Caroline, Ashley and Laura). Because we were drinking our own drinks, the bar man became really grumpy and closed the bar, switching the music off.. but it was Fayes b'day at o'clock so we decided to plug our ipod into their speakers and have our own pool party till early hours =)
We all hired a jeep the next day and went exploring the island- poor Faye was extremely hungover and was dying all day! We got told to travel to a particular beach by the guy we hired it off, however what he didnt tell us was how s***e his jeep was and how the 'roads' are more like dirt tracks that have pot holes and uneven ground all over! Even if that wasnt bad enough, the hills were stupidly steep- we had to drive in first gear the whole time and if we didnt get enough power, it would just cut out meaning that we had to roll back down the hill to flat ground to get a good run up at it, brilliant! All in all we had some adventures during the day; trying to find a 'fresh water lake that you can swim in' that turned out to be a grotty sewage lake, finding the Amsterdam bar and actually getting back to the resort in one piece! The rest of the time we just chilled out and went shopping for our full moon attire =)
The day of the full moon we spent lazing about ready for the carnage of the evening, and carnage it was! We got ready at the resort, having drinkies and fluro painting ourselves up to death, before heading over the Haad Rin at 11pm. When we got there it was a-mazing! There were different sound systems set up along the beach and it looked like a giant festival.. just on the beach! There were people fire skipping with a giant rope, Sam really wanted a go but after watching numerous people trying to do it and being caught around the legs on the the first jump, decided it wasnt such a good idea! If you can imagine Lord of the Rings where Gandalf is fighting the dragon/monster creature, and he is dragged down by the ankle by the creatures fire whip? yeah, ouch!
We took a stroll upto mushroom mountain where we were told you had to literally walk up a mountain.. nope, just a few steps to a bar. Decided to try a shroom shake whilst taking in the amazing view of the beach - people partying as far as you could see! We went back down the 'mountain' and sat on the beach where we laughed for ages...at nothing, it was great! When the sun started to come up you got to see the carnage that had occured.. people passed out all over the place, some dressed, some not. The sleeping area (also known as the humiliation area) is where people can go when they're wrecked for a lie down, apparently this is supervised but we had to tell one of the staff that someone was foaming at the mouth before they even noticed and called for medics. Another man woke up with only a shirt on- no pants, no wallet, no phone, and no idea where he was staying! He was so confused, bless!
It was so different seeing the party in daylight, some people thinking they were dancing in their heads, but their bodies not actually doing anything, ha ha! There were flip flops all over the place which came in very handy for Sam as she somehow lost hers during the night, she even managed to find a matching pair! The taxi ride home seemed like forever but was made abit more entertaining by everyone screaming as they went up and down the very steep sharp hillls, pretending they were on a rollarcoaster. Back at the resort we all got in the pool, going to bed at 8am. We had to check out at 10.30 so you can imagine how great we looked, and even more fun was the fact that we'd be travelling to Chaing Mai via 4 methods of transport in less than 24hours, wooo!
