We arrived in Sydney and checked into the hostel that Shaun, Lynsey and Critch (the guys we traveled Asia with) were staying, and had a chilled night. The next day we got up early and went on the hop on, hop off sightseeing bus, basically so we would see everything we needed to and to get our bearings. We also booked activities for the next few days because we only had a limited time in Sydney as one of our friends was leaving to go home so we needed to be in Melbourne by the Monday to say good bye (well a see you later, good byes are rubbish!) That night we met up with Shaun and some of his mates and had a messy night of free goon supplied by the hostel, oh yes the dreaded goon is back!
The next morning we had booked to do a trip to the Blue Mountains and were due to be collected at 7.55am. Unfortunately, we forgot to set an alarm in our goon state and at 8.10am we got a phone call asking if we were still doing the trip, oops! We explained that our alarm hadn't gone off and were told we had 20 minutes to get ourselves organised, not too bad you would think but we also had to check out because we had to change rooms! Anyways, we just about managed to compose ourselves and be ready for when the guy came back to get us (well he had to wait a few minutes) and jumped in the minibus ready for our trip. At this point we fell asleep, waking up feeling slightly fresher but also realising that the weather outside was not good! It was spitting, cold and cloudy. It was also at this point we remembered we had to do a trek and that we were wearing flip-flops, shorts and vest tops, oops again! Luckily for us, a lad we had met on our Nimbin tour, Adam, was on our bus and he and his friend and spare jackets so they lent us theirs, saving us.
Up in the mountains the weather wasn't any better, wet, cloudy and cold, so unfortunately we didn't get to see much. Later in the afternoon it cleared slightly to allow us to see part of a waterfall, but basically we didn't see anything we were supposed to. We managed to amuse ourselves though at a rainforest walk where there were figurines and other objects we could get some photos with. When we got back from the trip we jumped on the free city bus in the aim it would take us to our hostel so that we could get ready for the pub crawl and a reunion with the Asia crew. But obviously because it's us, the bus doesn't go past our hostel and we didn't realise the stop we should have got off at, so we ended up back where we started! So after walking back to the hostel we were running very late so had to meet everyone at the second pub on the crawl. When we caught up with everyone we had a wkd night, it was so good to see everyone again, the only two that were missing were Phil and Rach =( After the crawl and club we continued drinking at the hostel until we finally went to bed at 4.30am, obviously we didn't think this would effect us at surf school that we had the following morning, we were very wrong!
We had to get up at 7.30am and walk half and hour to Central Station where we were being collected for surf school. Not only were we hung over and incredibly tired, it was also really cold AGAIN! Whilst waiting to be collected we managed to fall asleep in a busy room full of people coming and going, and once in the van Sam somehow managed to fall asleep sat up, being woken up suddenly every time we were thrown around as a result of the bumpy road to the beach. We drove an hour South to the National Park where we spent the day surfing. When we fist arrived we thought we'd outdone ourselves this time especially when we had to put damp wetsuits on and practice the four positions by jumping up and down on the boards, but when we actually got into the water it was all good! As the day went on we felt alot better and actually began to enjoy ourselves. Dani wasn't too keen on the whole idea initially but she ended up having alot of fun, and by the end of the day we both stood up and caught our own waves, woo! By late afternoon Sam was done, she went to lie on the beach as she was officially dying. Although we discovered that surfing is not our fortay we had alot of fun learning this =) That night as you can imagine we were wiped out so after going to Darling Harbour for a drink with Adam we headed back to the hostel and were in bed just after 12.
The next day we got our first lie in Sydney and it was gooooood! We spent the day looking around the city and taking pictures before going to do our Harbour Bridge walk. Sam was a little nervous but as soon as you get to the top all nerves were lost, the view was amazing! The climb took just over 3 hours and we climbed 1437 steps, go us! Some interesting facts about the Bridge: it took over 8 years to build and in that time 8 men fell off! However one man managed to survive, a lucky Irish man who fell off while using a rivet gun. Because he was a diver he knew how to land in the water and managed to swim to a nearby boat. In 1973, Philippe Petit walked a wire rigged between the two north pylons of the Bridge until police threatened to cut the rope! We headed back to the hostel where we got ready and went out for tea with Lynz before going to meet the boys at the Becks festival.
The next morning we were up and headed to Central to catch our Greyhound to Canberra, bye bye Sydney!
