Day 69-75 in the world of Sam and Dani: We arrived in Sihanoukville in the afternoon and got moto's to Beach Road which is the main backpacker area. We headed down to the beach where there are loads of different bars, looking specifically for Sessions Bar which is run by a person from Halifax. That night we went down the beach for a few drinks, which obviously led into alot of drinks, ending up with us watching the sunrise on the beach - awesome! The next day was written off as you can imagine, but we managed to pull ourselves together for the same thing the following night and even managed to experience a Cambodian nightclub, you know because it would be rude not to =)
When we woke up the next day we found out that a storm (the aftermath of the typhoon that hit the Philippines) had hit the coast causing the beach where we'd been two nights before to be completely destroyed! We went down for a look and you wouldn't have recognised it, the seats we'd been sat on were gone and the bar had collapsed.
We found out that the typhoon that hit the Philippines had also hit Vietnam and Northern Cambodia (where we'd been 5 days ago), causing severe flooding and deaths. Some of our friends we'd met in Laos were in Ho Chi Minh and told us (via the wonderful world of facebook) that they had been evacuated out of central Vietnam and where they were currently had no power. We were due to leave the following day for Vietnam but were advised to stay put because of the storms and based on what the boys told us, along with the fact that the buses aren't that great in Cambodia, the group took a vote and agreed that it was safest to stay until the bad weather passed.
We ended up staying an extra 3 days and although the weather in Sihanoukville itself was improving (we even got 2 days at the beach), weather elsewhere wasn't that good so we held back chilling by the pool, watching films etc. We decided to have ladies night on one of the evenings so sent the boys to watch football whilst we went out and did some serious drinking. What wasn't such a good idea was the snorkelling trip we planned for the following day... Luckily, the weather didn't allow us to go as the tour operators couldn't even get on the boat themselves, clearly our stomachs would have hated it!
After seeing all the lovely pyjamas the Cambodians wear, we decided that we'd like to join in on the fashion trend. We went to the market and everyone, well except Shaun who was being boring, bought some beautiful coloured pjs to wear on the bus into Vietnam. We weren't too sure how the pjs would go down with the locals, but the following morning as we were walking to the bus we had them all shouting, waving and smiling at us saying 'you be Cambodian, good good'.. question answered!
