Arrived in Hue after 4 hour drive an 1 hr flight! Hue was the capital n home of the Kings of Vietnam until 1945 when Ho Chi Minh declared communism n the last King was overthrown! USA used the palace n Citidel as a main base during the war until 1968 when the Viet Kong broke a 4 day truce on Xmas day n beat them in a battle.following this up with massacring 1000 well thought of locals who they beleived could be sympathisers. Happy Christmas, eh?! 2 million live here now but the Palace, Forbidden City, various Kings mauseleums n temples are allowed to rot while millions are spent on maintaining Ho Chi Minh's dead body in Hanoi! Real shame as so much to see n wont last if not looked after! We have spent last day (8th Dec) in Ho Lan beach resort for 4 days R n R but it has poured with rain n we have had to spend it in bar overlooking river, drinking wine (one of us has indulged slightly more!) n now updating the blog for last few days. Bex will now take over , so could be a lot less 'boring' history stuff n a tad more amusing! xxYes boring bit over...after Halong Bay which was totally A MAZ ING as Craig Revelhorn would put it was just beautiful we then ventured south to Hue. Which is not so beautiful. Used to be the capital so has the palace and museums about the kings etc but on the whole Hue not as pretty and quite poor. So after the war stuff, graveyard bits and general historical ruins we ended up in a bar next to a hostel which was pretty full on party till you drop - mostly full of young backpackers! Dan got friendly with the DJ and was invited to plug his Iphone into the system to play some of our tunes which went down really well till Rick Astley came on! Dan still can't understand why they didn't appreciate a bit of Boney M either!!!After Hue we travelled south to Hoi An which is where we are now. On the way we stopped at a few more museums which was about Cham's People - no nothing to do with Pans! Cham's people were the first people to live in Vietnam! Then onto Marble Mountain. A real tourist attraction as used to be where the soldiers and locals hid during the war - some families lived in this cave for 15 years! I was quite happy to get out of there as now the only things that live there are bats - loads of them! We are now here at a great hotel in Hoi An. Loads better! Beach, luxury, laidback feel, plenty of cheap wine... and rain!!! Yep its been raining cats and dogs!.. Talking of which we popped into a bar for a snack and they had "Alsation Burger" on the menu.. think I will stick to the boring cheese one thanks!Dont' get me wrong the whole place is very interesting and there is a strong sense of angst about the war as it was just over 30 years ago so talked about alot and Dan having his strong war interest there is little else talked about here! Except!!!! All Vietnamese want to talk about is where we are from, when we are getting married and when having children... and then can you come to my sister's shop to get a dress made? And thats to Dan! There are tailors everywhere here! Bit like the million motorbikes you had in Hanoi! Everyone harrasses you to get a suit, dress or anything made here. I did eventually give in and said I would get a dress ..... the answer was "no we can't as didn't have the material!" so that was that!As I said its absolute typhoon weather here... but we took cover in a great a little bar called Cargo and spent the afternoon drinking wine! It was awful!! Photos are on the way and have updated some photos of Halong and various other places too!We are bit sick of the food as I feel like I'm ordering a chinese every night.. one more spring roll and I'll look like one!! Anyway the hotel is lovely and we have a shower not just made for someone 3ft 6inches tall so Dan happy too. Apparently getting some sun tomorrow so a few days relaxing until off to Saigon. Yep more war stuff!!!..... xxxx
