We have finally arrived to our last port of call in Vietnam, Chau Doc, which is a small border town built on a dam on the Mekong Delta. We spent previous day driving through the Mekong to Can Tho, the capital of the Delta with 2500 people living in a city which is based around it's floating water market...not a favourite for us, didn't have buzz of a city, a bit like Norwich! Hotel had seen better times as well. After boat trip to see floating Market (we couldn't face an 8am start so missed the height of it..good decision!) sailed to a farmers orchard, sampled various fruits n then up to Chau Doc via a very dusty 150 year old Chinese house. The hotel in Chau Doc was beautiful sat on edge of Delta river with a great pool n lovely restaurant...so we had a night of room service n watched The Deer Hunter! Early night as 6am start for 4hr motor boat drive up the Delta to cross border into CAMBODIA.
Last thoughts on Vietnam. The people are so friendly n smile all the time, really made it fantastic for us n always felt safe. Lots of history to see n Saigon is an exciting city. The people are so positive n appear to have moved on from the American war (probably didnt help that we asked constant questions about it!) but do not like the French for how they were treated n what was stolen over to France in the 100 years of being a colony. The guides n drivers we would recommend to anyone who does this trip ...we saw n learnt so much more than trying to do it all on our own. Actually we probably would have missed alot as musuems etc shut by midday! Definitely would like to return probably to Saigon and a beach resort.
I was very sad to leave Saigon our stay was far too short, the second place we wished we had more time in. U need at least four days I think. Next few days has been a lot driving so more of Dan snoring in the back while I chat to our guide Son. He is our third guide now and has become our favourite. He is very softly spoken so it is easy to drop off in his company!!! He is the most interesting and full of stories and tales and most importantly started the day a bit later for us when we needed a few more hours sleep!! Sailing down the Mekong and visiting the locals was a great end to our time in Vietnam although neither of us could understand each other so not alot of chatting going on more nodding and smiling and Dan out of pity offering them some money, which on one occasion Dan thinking he was being very generous realised it turned out to be the equivalent of 4p!! We thought they didn't look that happy!!
So onto Cambodia on a speed boat! Dan gets seasick so hoping he doesn't puke all the way into Cambodia all over the 6 French people who are travelling with us.....on the other hand!! X
Ps I don't snore n 1 hr in haven't been sick yet...

Jane Hislam Oh Lord help you when you arrive to stay with us! I can only recommend you stockpile some sleep and bring ear plugs & eye shades. Our boys like to sleep in when they should not & wake up early when they should be sleeping in. You'll see.......
