Dan and Lu's Travels
Booked our tickets to Koh Samui for tomorrow.
Got a tuk tuk to take us to the Grand Palace. The driver first insisted on taking us to the standing Buddha, which is gold and 45m high, and then to the lucky Buddha, which didn't seem much of anything. He then wanted to take us to some travel agencies as he would get petrol tokens as commission. We said we didn't want to book anything but he went on so we agreed.
These tuk tuks are the real deal. They are cheeky looking things that are noisy and hot but quite fun as you feel like you're on a go-kart.
We finally got to the Grand Palace. Wow.
The compound has many buildings inside including the Grand Palace and the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (which isn't emerald but a monk thought it was years ago and it kicked off a myth.) This place is like a fairy land. The Temple of the Emerald Buddha is fabulous, couln't stop looking at it. It's completely covered with tiny diamonds of coloured glass and mirror and just sparkles incessantly in the sun. Everything is either hand painted tile or jewelled. Absolutely spectacular. I want one.
Then to Wat Pho, which is next door to the Grand Palace. This is where the largest Buddha in Thailand reclines inside a building. I thought I'd seen enough Buddha's to last me a lifetime but this is breathtaking. It fills the building at 46m long, and is gold with gorgeoud\s mother of pearl inlay on the base of its feet.
Chilled out, did a bit of shopping (I've lost weight and none of my trousers or shorts fit me anymore - good excuse!) and had a few drinks.
