Dan and Claire go worldwide
Hey guys,
Sorry we havent updated you much since we arrived. As you can imagine its been pretty hectic!!! we have finally managed to get some photo uploaded for you to see and a message of what we have been up to in fab argentina!
Our first stop Buenos Aires and it is absolutley gorgeous. We are having such a fab time! Every district in the city is so different and varied, each is really charming in its own way. You can go from crazy city life to peaceful gardens in a 5 minute walk. Its huge like London and we havent attempted the underground system or buses yet so we have literally been walking 8-10 miles a day. The feet are really suffering!!
The weather has been really varied. The first couple of days it rained, others it has been very hot, with cloudy and mild days too. Got caught out on the second day when the rain cleared and got nice and burnt!! looking forward to the hot weather in Brazil and a nice beach to laze on!
When we first arrived we stayed downtown which is the busy central part. It apparently is quite similar to New York with its layout. The roads here are absolutely huge, some roads we cross are 16 lanes wide. You literally have to run across the pedestrian crossings because they seriously probably wouldn't stop for you. 10 points for a pedestrian and all that!! The taxi drivers are so crazy over here...they indicate with their arms, never stay in lanes and shout at each other, randomly beeping as they drive down the street! its so mad, but highly amusing!
We stayed in the cultural side of downtown called San Telmo. It has a very authentic spanish culture, with gorgeous old buildings and cobbled streets. On sunday we went to a huge market there selling old antiques and beautiful handmade jewelery. It was amazing, with tango dancers on the street and street entertainers until dusk. It was just like a little spanish town and a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Just how you would imagine it to be.
We have seen so much in such a short space of time. There is so much history here and we have seen lots of lovely buildings/monuments/plazas and visited evita's (eva peron) tomb in the most amazing cemetrey yesterday. It was quite eerie. There is lots of beautiful green spaces here too. We have visited a japanese rose garden, botanical gardens and a big zoo with lots of cool animals that you can feed and lovely little monkeys! We went there with an old guy called Bill who is 70 and from Canada who paid for us to get in because we showed him the way to get there!! Was really sweet!!
We have moved over to the other side of town now called Palmero Soho, and it is absolutely amazing! It is named after Soho district in London and it is just like it, mixed with notting hill. Its the trendy end of town with LOADS of lovely designer boutiques, posh restaraunts and cool corner cafes to chill out in in the day. There is such a chilled out cafe culture here, and its so relaxing and unlike England! wish you were all here to experience it, you would love it!
The only weird thing here in Buenos Airies though is the blatant mix between poverty and wealth. There are lots of street kids going through the rubbish bags at the side of the road when you are eating a meal ,or shopping in the day. No one even blinks an eyelid because over here it is the norm. Its really sad as a lot of them are so young.
It is unbelievably cheap here too...i am finding it hard to resist the shopping as all of you girlies will understand! Dan however has not been so good, as you would have probably have guessed!!You can buy the most beautiful, original designer clothes for next to nothing, and the high street shops down town (similar to Oxford Street) is even cheaper! It is seriously heavenly! The food here is amazing to. The steak really is as good as they say! We have been eating out at lovely restaraunts every night for nothing. We went to the docks which is the posh district in town and had a beautiful meal for the equivalent of 40 pounds. For you pompey lot, its like gunwharf quays byt 10 times better!! The food, service, atmosphere and general experience was unbelievable (honestly!), and you would pay so much more for that it england. It was our late velentines meal so we thought we would splash out!!
The hostels have been really good to, and the people so lovely and friendly. Because it is so cheap we have only stayed in a dorm room one night and have had our own bed the rest of the time, so we have been in luxury! The one night we did stay on a dorm the big brazilian guy on the top bunk started shouting real loud in his sleep and startled me and woke me up and i thought someone was in the room!! ha ha!! funny looking back! At the mo were staying in a lovely hostel with a beautiful garden and a dog called Mora whos real cute who tries to sit on you and lick you. Bless.
