Well last night ended up being a little bigger than expected. I think I may have a problem. Seems like just a few drinks while traveling never ends up being just a few drinks. We had a wander down Kaosan & grabbed some food and a beer before heading back to our local bar. It was pretty quiet but we did see George, Pom, Paul & Ranny. We had a few drinks with them until George closed up the bar, then we all headed up to the hive of activity at Kaosan. Here we had some more drinks at a few bars before 4am came & we said our goodbyes. George & Pom had looked after us during our stay & we will sing their praises to anyone coming to Thailand. This morning we were up & out of our room by 12pm. We were sorry to say goodbye to the hotel & Bangkok, which has been amazing. The good thing is it is relatively close to Oz & a place we will definately return to, & hopefully bring some friends to share the experience. We took a cab to the bus station & found our way on to the next bus departing for Ayutthaya. It was a 2 hour ride but it was air conditioned & hardly anybody was on board. After a short but deep sleep we arrived & caught a Tuk Tuk to our hotel which was a fair way from the centre of town. As we headed there we saw elephants being ridden & lots of ancient ruins. We have definately downgraded since Bangkok as we don't have a/c but the fan should keep us reasonably cool. It is still nice enough though. Being on the edge of town we are close to the jungle & hear a lot of strange birds. After a short rest we went for a walk back into town. We walked past some of the ancient ruins but ended up hailing a Tuk Tuk to take us to the train station. We wanted to buy our tickets on one of the sleeper trains for tomorrow night to Chiang Mai. So when we got to the ticket counter all the trains were fully booked. b*****! We had planned to spend the day around Ayutthaya where we could see all the ruins, then sleep on the train to Chiang Mai in the evening. There were still tickets available for tomorrow mornings train but we would have to think about it. We wandered across the road & had an average dinner at a guest house where we could use their wifi. We found we could take overnight buses but they were pretty expensive. The other option was a regular bus through the day but we had to buy tickets from the central bus station. So we hired another Tuk & returned to the town centre where just about everything was closed & we couldn't find the bus station. The Tuk driver had no idea what we were asking. We wandered around trying to find it ourselves but had no luck & we just got pretty annoyed with the whole place. As a result we went home & booked an extra nights accommodation in Chiang Mai & will get down to the station pretty early. Will be hoping we can get on the train as we just want to get out of here.
