We drove through the Alps to Venice, which was beautiful. We arrived at a nearby city and had to take a train into Venice around 8 pm. We're staying in a small hotel right on the Grand Canal, but on the opposite end of Piazza San Marco, the main attraction area with the basilica and tower.
