This morning we set out in good time and drove over to the famous Daytona Beach where the raceway originated. You can still drive onto the beach and motor slowly to a spot by yourself. There were quite a few on the beach even though it was only 9.00am and it looked very inviting with clean white sand and gentle rollers coming in.
We then stopped at the Daytona International Raceway and had a look at this huge track. It is 1.6 miles around the oval, banked track and the stands would seat over 300,000 people I would guess!!!!!! There were a couple of cars testing for events over the July 4th holiday and they were really flying around the track. I can just imagine the noise from a full crowd and 40 odd cars on the grid.
From there we drove north to St Augustine where we stopped for a coffee and a look at the oldest house in the USA. St Augustine was discovered in 1563 and has a whole precinct of historical places that was very interesting. Tourists were very plentiful and it looked like quite a nice place.
Back into the throng of traffic on Interstate 95 we passed through Jacksonville, went over a huge suspension bridge and passed a large port and power station, then motored on through the usual thunderstorm to Savannah. The driving conditions were pretty ordinary through the storm - lots of road works and some morons still doing 80mph with no lights on!!!
Tomorrow we will have a look at some of the history in Savannah and then set out further north.
