Deciding on some retail therapy, we headed back to Champs-Élysées at about 9.00am. Lauren had heard Nike shoes were cheap in Paris (hehe, nothing is cheap in Paris), alas it was not to be.
Breakfast at George V, and on to The Louvre for a little cultural experience.
Now I understand, this is a French museum in France, but I would hesitate a guess, a fair number of visitors would speak another language other than French! Why wouldn't you put another popular language, let's say English, on the little plaques describing the artwork?
Nup, instead you have carry around this ridiculous Nintendo game consul and try to navigate around the 206,000 sq metre of the ex-palace! 90% of the visitors are walking around like lost sheep with absolutely no idea where they are or what they are looking at… You may think that it's just the old boy, but Lauren, although better than me, was lost most of the time. The Louvre is an amazing collection of antiques and artefacts, but for this reason, I will not be returning.
We did manage to find the well hidden Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa, along with some other wonderful "unknown" works of art.
For dinner, we decided to go in search of some limbless amphibian corpses, hoping to confirm the amputations (I'm starting to feel sorry for the frog) are in fact, "just like chicken"…
Roger La Grenouille appeared to be the #1 choice in Paris, so off we went. We must be getting used to the twilight, as we didn't leave home until 9.45pm. Arriving in the Latin Quarter, a lively area near the Notre Dame, full of Bistro's, street music, crazy people and night life, around 10.15pm, we spent about 45 minutes searching the streets, to no avail. Fearing we may not be able to find a meal at all if we waited much longer, we wandered into a little place called Café de Paris. Still bustling with heavy smoking diners, the maître de was kind enough to search our intended destination.
Finally arriving at Roger La Grenouille at 11.15pm, the kitchen had closed 30 minutes earlier… We can only assume, they ran out of legs, as every other restaurant in the area was cranking!
We eventually enjoyed a wonderful meal of risotto and spaghetti at Café de Paris.
I have never really explored the Latin Quarter before, but I certainly will next time, it has a great feel about it!
