30/5 Monday Santiago
Having found my way from the bus station to the Last Stamp Albergue on Sunday evening it was straight to bed.
Monday’s plan was a little gift shopping and a rooftop tour of the Cathedral which I’d been advised was very worthwhile for the views and architecture. The receptionist at the Albergue had recommended a couple of shops where I might find Noah some kind of superhero t-shirt. I headed away from the old centre to the first which didn’t open until 11am! So, breakfast time with coffee and chocolate croissant at the rather lovely Casa Felisa. Then the hunt for Noah’s t-shirt continued. The two recommended shops didn’t deliver but I did eventually find a blue Lego superheroes camino t-shirt which ticked all the boxes.
The t-shirt hunt kept me busy until almost 1pm when hunger set in. I’d seen a cafe I’d liked the look of around the back of the Cathedral so I headed through the main square thinking I’d got time to kill before my 4pm roof-top tour. As I walked by the Cathedral who should I see but Tatjana. This was most unexpected and another camino co-incidence! She’d just come out of the pilgrims’ mass and I told her about the roof-top tour. We got her booked in on that and headed off for lunch. My cafe choice was now surrounded by scaffolding so we wandered a little way and found a cafe that provided me with delicious prawn and octopus skewers. We had a drink and a chat and agreed to meet again for the roof-top tour.
I’d recommend the roof-top tour if you are ever in Santiago. It was terrific to get a close up view of the high towers of the cathedral and the views of the old town were splendid too. After the tour we headed off for a drink and cheesecake, the latter being so substantial I decided I’d not need to eat a meal later. Tatjana and I said another goodbye and I headed back to the Albergue to organise packing, check how to get to the airport etc. Tomorrow I was flying home!
