Smiling you bet. The weather gods were with us today. Today was our second day in Paracas and after leaving the Hilton early we headed out to the Ballestas islands. The islands are situated off the coast of the Paracas Reserve, Peru's largest coastal wildlife sanctuary. The amazing islands are home to thousands of migratory sea birds. You have to wear a hat , no guessing why... Some of the different birds there were pelicans, Humboldt penguins, huge sea lions and the Peruvian booby. (ray prefers the aust booby lol....) One the way to the islands by boat we saw the mysteriously drawing etched on the desert face it is called the Candlelabra. No one knows how old it is or how it got there and it's actually two metres deep into the rock face !! It also points directly to the nasca plains few hundred miles away. Amazing huh .
After the 2 hour boat journey seeing the islands we went out to Nazca Airport. After getting on our little 10 seater plane we were off .... Noisey as inside the plane. And boy do they take you on a ride. The plane banks sharply left and right so that everyone on board gets to see all the amazing drawings below on the desert floor.
We flew over only 50 square kilometres out of the over 500 square kilometres of these amazing geoglyphs. Some of the one we saw were the humming bird, the dog, the parrot and heaps of triangles and spirals carved into the land and which apparently have been preserved for almost 2000 years according to the experts.
Another tick off the list. Didn't get sick on the little plane but a few people on board did. After our little flight we were taken to the 'bus depot' (see the pic's) to wait for our luxury bus trip back to Lima. Then once we finally got into our hotel at about 8.30pm we had to pack up ready for our early flight out in the morning. Lima to Cusco here we come.
