We set off early from Adelaide to head down to the ferry at Cape Jervis over to Kangaroo Island. It was a very rocky journey so I began to feel a little sick and I already wasn't feeling 100% with a sore throat and temperature. I was glad when we reached land! We headed over to Cape Willoughby Lighthouse to start our adventure on the Island. There wasn't great roads so we had to do some 4WD which is always a bit exciting! The lighthouse was very pretty and had some lovely ocean views. Unfortunately we didn't spot any whales even though they frequently have sightings. After that we did a little exploring in the car over to American River and then up to Kingscote where we were staying. We had some lunch at a local cafe before driving up to Emu Bay. Unfortunately the weather wasn't brilliant so there was no sunbathing but we did get to see a lady feed some pelicans on the jetty. We headed back to Kingscote to see a proper pelican feeding show and there must have been around 40 of them there plus a couple of Pacific Gulls there too which were impressive birds. I was feeling pretty rough by the end of the day so was glad when we got back to our villa. I had an early night but unfortunately had a horrible sleep. The bed was so uncomfortable and I was in a fair bit of pain from my throat that I just couldn't sleep.
So by Tuesday morning I was feeling a lot worse. I'd lost my voice in the morning but it did come back gradually through the day. Eating, drinking and taking painkillers also became much harder. But being stranded on an Island there wasn't much we could do. So I powered on through anyway, sleeping every time I got back in the car! We went to Seal Bay to watch some sea lions who were resting on the beach and coming in and out of the water. They were so gorgeous! There was a few that were very close to the viewing platform as well so got some good shots! We were told it was a popular breeding area for the Australian sea lions which explains why we saw quite a lot of pups there too. After that we headed to Vivonne Bay which was gorgeous. It had a long jetty and such clear water. We didn't stay too long being pushed for time to get to the other end of the Island. We spent most of the afternoon at Flinders Chase Park which had some lovely walks and was great to see the wildlife. We saw some Fur Seals on the rocks when we went to Admirals Arch and the Remarkable Rocks were pretty 'remarkable'. We also did a Heritage Trail walk where we saw wild koalas, kangaroos (including a joey!!), beautiful birds, wallabies etc. it was wonderful and so nice to see them outside of a zoo! We saw kangaroos on Kangaroo Island! Unfortunately we also saw a lot of dead ones on the side of the road... People need to be more careful when driving! Back at the villa we had a small dinner and I went straight to bed really. I felt very drained and not in a good way.
We had to be up very early the next morning to drive over to Penneshaw to catch the ferry. I was so exhausted and faint that I couldn't even keep my eyes open. Once we got to the other side my parents drove straight up to Adelaide to take me to an emergency walk in centre to get some medicine. We tried to call a few doctors for appointments but weren't able to get one. We only wanted a prescription but after the doctor checked me over and said 's***' I went straight on a drip and had various things pumped into me haha. Not quite what I was expecting but I was almost dozing through most of it so wasn't really aware of what was happening... And not my first time being in a hospital overseas! Just my luck... But thankfully after a few hours the medicine and painkillers had started kicking in and the swelling in my throat went down a little which meant I could start drinking water and having little bits of food. I was put on a 12 day course of anti-biotics which will be fun! Unfortunately the little trip ruined our plans for that day so we had a near on 5 hour car journey to get to where we were staying for the night. I slept through most of it so wasn't too bad hehe. We stayed on a winery called Punters Retreat which was just beautiful. I would happily live in a house like it. It was cosy but modern and had the most beautiful surroundings. Literally situated on an active winery. Just gorgeous. We all wished we were staying there longer than one night!
