On Thursday morning, we had a relaxed start, making some bacon and egg sarnies and having a little lie in. When we were ready we went to the Naracoorte Caves where we had a tour learning about the bats and exploring some of the caves. They estimated that in their bat cave alone there were around 30,000 bats!! And they've had more in the past... After that we hopped in the car and drove to Mt Gambier where we had some fantastic views of the Blue Lake which was the brightest turquoise colour I've ever seen. It was almost unbelievable that it was a natural colour. It was a nice little town so we stopped and went into a cafe which had some enormous and very yummy looking cakes! I treated myself to a chocolate milkshake which may have been one of the best I've ever had! Then we headed up to Port Fairy where we were staying for the night. We had a nice evening walk around the harbour before grabbing some dinner.
The next day we set out for the Great Ocean Road. There were lots of scenic places we stopped at but some of the best were the Bay of Islands, London Bridge, the Arch, Loch Ard Gorge, the Twelve Apostles (there was only seven still standing though!), Gibson Steps and Maits Rest Rainforest Boardwalk. The scenery was fantastic and not like I've seen before. The drive itself along the road was pretty cool too. It was all so beautiful and changed quite dramatically between sections. From the roaring ocean to inside a rainforest. It's quite hard to describe it in words. We stopped at Port Cambell for lunch and had a paddle in the ocean. It was ice cold!! So a swim was out of the question, unfortunately as it was a gorgeous beach. That evening we stayed at Apollo Bay which was a bit busier than some of the other places we've stayed. We stayed at Claerwen Retreat which was up on the hillside and had some beautiful views of the rainforest and coast all at the same time.
Our first stop on Saturday was Carisbrook Waterfall. We had a short hike up to the viewpoint where we were greeted with a lovely view of the fall. Our next stop was a town called Lorne which had a nice bay and some lovely shops and cafes. We had a casual wander around, not really in a rush. We headed over to Anglesea where we had lunch at a little quirky cafe. And after that I think we were all a bit fed up of being in the car so we just drove straight on through to Melbourne. Once checked in at the hotel we freshened up before heading down to the docks to go for some drinks... Although due to my medication my alcohol in take is limited! Plus, it was so expensive! Always forget how much more everything costs in a city! Yikes!
It was a good road trip along the south coast of Australia and doing it by car means you get to see so much more of the country! So even though it does take a long time and at points the between car journeys did get a little dull, it was definitely a great way to see some of the wonderful sights South Australia/Victoria have to offer!
