Luxembourg was a really interesting stop and good value too, but we have a ferry booked back to the uk. We filled Connie to the brim with fuel as it’s the cheapest in western Europe here in Luxembourg and set off for Belgium. Next stop Ghent, a great campsite with a free shuttle bus to and from the city. Ghent is often called Europe’s best kept secret and we can see why. A city crammed with interesting architecture. Medieval market squares, churches and cathedrals, bridges, canals and a medieval castle. We took a self guided walking tour which took us past the various landmarks and gave us interesting stories about the town. For example St Michaels Church paid for by the brewers guild, took 385 years to complete, and was protected from damage by the brewers giving free beer to rioters. We really enjoyed Ghent.
For our last night in mainland Europe we stopped at a new campsite in Calais just 15 minutes from the ferry port. Any sadness that the end of our trip had come was offset by the extreme weather, heavy rain and gale force winds that rocked Connie.
Our ferry crossing was smooth despite the previous night’s weather and we arrived at Dover to sunshine. Driving in the Uk is different to Europe, not in a good way.
We arrived home early evening of the 9th of October to a warm welcome from our house sitters.
And so ends another world adventure. Since arriving home we have enjoyed catching up with friends & family and we have a new member of the family as we have adopted a cat, Martha, from the local Cats Protection Home. She’s 10-12 years old, looks like a black panther and only has 1 eye, following an injury - but she’s very friendly & has already settled into her new home..
And we’ve just collected our chickens from their foster home. Thanks to peter and Ali they are all in the best of health.
