It was a second early start in a row as the alarm went off at 5:40am to get us out of bed for the early morning Greyhound Bus to Byron Bay.We didn't know a whole lot about Byron Bay ahead of going down there except that it was a pretty relaxed surfing town so it sounded rather good!
Alannagh and Robert were again kind enough to drop us to the Bus Station even though it was 6:30 on a Saturday morning!!!We said goodbye to them and hopped on the bus for our 5 hour journey to Byron which by now felt like a short trip down the road after all the 11 hour journeys!Because of the time of year (run up to Christmas) it was very difficult to get accommodation in Byron but we found a little guesthouse just outside the town who arranged to collect us from the bus station. It was a really nice place although it was twice the price we had been paying for hostels!
This was the first of our 2 days in Byron so we decided to make the most of our time and dumped our bags in the room and headed out on the bicycles that were free to use from the guesthouse. We took a ride out to Clarke Beach and began the walk up the hill to Cape Byron Lighthouse and the most easterly point of the Australian mainland. It was so hot that afternoon and it was a tough walk but once we got up there it was well worth it with the amazing views so we got a few great photographs before deciding we had earned a cold drink and an ice cream! We spent a bit more time around the beach before heading back to the guesthouse where we decided to have a short sleep to recharge our batteries……..eventually we woke up at 9pm!!!We spent the rest of the night talking to home on Skype and took a late night walk into town to get Pizza and a drink before bed.We were both a bit annoyed at having wasted our only night in Byron with having slept so long but at least there was tomorrow…………
What a boring day our final day in Byron was!!It hammered down torrential rain from 8am until we were due to leave. This would have been ok on any normal day but we had to check out of our guesthouse at 10am and were on an overnight bus to Sydney that night so we had nowhere to store our rucksacks! We ended up spending our last day sitting in the guesthouse common area updating photographs and blogs, drinking tea and coffee and praying for the rain to stop - it didn't!!We grabbed a taxi into town (no evening buses as it was a Sunday) at 7pm with our bags and had a bite to eat before joining the scrum to try and get on the bus to Sydney. We had our seats booked but there are no seat allocations so it was always a shoving match to try and get sitting together! We got our seats and put them back to try and get comfortable ahead of our 770km, 13 hour bus journey!
Next stop in the morning is Sydney - cannot wait!!
