Hey friends!
Again, we've been so busy adventuring around that we haven't had the time to tell you about it, so here goes!
After Zurich we decided to take a side trip to Interlaken instead of going straight to Austria. We stayed in a crazy hostel called Funny Farm; we understood the name when we the receptionist at the hostel pointed us to our room, which was in an old barn. As dirty as the hostel seemed we still managed to sleep some and have a ton of fun. We made more friends there than probably anywhere we have been yet!
Interlaken is this incredibly beautiful town nestled between two lakes in the Swiss Alps so everwhere you look there are beautiful green and white mountains jutting into the sky. The air was incredibly clean and the whole town (which is very small) is lively and seems to have a young adventurous spirit. We think that its the extreme sporting capital of the world! So, needless to say we adventured. We did this crazy thing called canyoning, which is one of the most dangerous things we've both ever done. There aren't words to describe what it is but in short we got decked out in wetsuits, helmets and harnesses, drove 40 minutes up a mountain, then repelled 150 meters off the side of the highway down into a glacial river canyon. From there we climbed cliffs, lept off of them, zip-lined (through a mini cave), hiked down the river, and slid off natural waterslides and waterfalls (on purpose). We had two amazing guides with us who told us what to do to stay alive and made the trip a ton of fun. Our group was fun too, we ended up hanging out with them for the rest of our stay in Interlaken--we might even meet up with them in Rome. A girl on our trip slid accidentally off a waterfall, fell into some rocks and cut her face open. Thankfully she was fine, but it made us a little more careful as we dove off cliffs and such.
The next day we climbed a mountain! A really big one (we'll show you pictures)! We think we climbed about 2500 feet to the top (which was around 4300 feet high). It was not an easy climb but when we finally got to the top (where a little restaurant awaited us) we were once again struck speechless by the incredible view (again, pics to come soon). We could see from there the two lakes, Interlaken down below, and the highest point in Europe, a mountain called Jungfraujaughwoeriejwo (there might be a few letters added in there...my swiss German isnt very good- its pronounced young-frow.
After a few exhausting days in Interlaken (we extened our stay another day because we liked it so much) we jumped on a night train to Vienna. We didn't get sleepers so we sat up all night crammed into a stuffy cabin with three guys. Eww. We are tired but excited to be here. Since we coudnt check into our hostel until 2pm we headed downtown to see the Saturday market. It was lots of fun...there was a flea market and a huge fruits and vegetable market. Tomorrow we hope to rent bikes and see abit more of the city (hopefully being a bit less tired)! We love you and miss you and we will update as soon as we can!!!
