After 2 days on the slow boat...slow being the operative word I finally arrived in Luang Prabang. Don't be fooled in thinking that this place would be like a poverty stricken hole of a place it is one of the most beautiful little places I have ever seen. It just oozes charm and character. The French influence is so clear here form the houses to the cafes and restaurants..this place is amazing! Graeme, Gabs and I stayed at the nicest guesthouse. Our room was gorgeous, it was all wood panelled with a really nice new bathroom and the best thing about this place was the large communal balcony. Other people from the boat stayed with us too and it was nice to chill on the terrace in the afternoon or after a night out.
By the time we had got to the guesthouse, time was getting on so we all showered and headed off to a restaurant which overlooked the Mekong. How romantic, 2 girls and a gay guy! ha ha. I thought as I'm in Laos I'll really get into it by drinking Laos wine and ordering Lao style Mekong fish....BIG MISTAKE! I was SOOO hungry as I barely ate on the boat and I seriously had the food grumps and when my dinner came out I was so disappointed. It was pretty gross and to be honest it was my own fault for being too adventurous! Oh and the Wine... Lao wine is a big fat NO NO! We chilled that night after a couple of drinks in Hive bar with some others from the boat. Everything closes so early...except for the bowling alley...
The next day we went for breakfast in the nicest little place called L'Etranger. It was delicious, the sun was shining, the place was beautiful...what more can a girl wish for?! Ok...Prince Charming in an Aston Martin...hmm.. Moving on.. We wandered around Luang Prabang, looking at the little market, went to the river and sat and watched the world go by. These people barely have anything but they are so happy. We saw the temple and the little streets..its so pretty! As I hadnt had phone signal the whole time on the boat I finally received about 5 messages from my other lot saying they were worried about me and to get in touch asap. I managed to get in contact with them and found out they were in Vang Vieng. Which I was where I was planning on going the next day. Gaby and Graeme decided to come with me as well so we booked our bus for the next day.
Our last night in Luang Prabang was awesome. We met everyone for a drink in Lao Lao Garden Bar and bumped into the massive group of Aussies and scousers etc that I hadnt been able to go with on the bus from Chiang Mai. The boat I was supposed to be getting with them had serious problems.. it was too full so some of them had to get the bus and they were told that it would take 9 hours and it took them 18!! They were crammed on the floor of a bu with bags of rice and all sorts.. i was wetting myself when they told me....everything happens for a reason! ha ha. After the bar closed at midnight we all headed to the bowling alley...the only place to buy a beer after 12. It was so funny. We all packed ourselves in a tuk tuk and went. We decided to actually bowl and this stupid Aussie girl and 2 weird French guys kept taking my go..i didnt even know them! Cheeky sausages! It was such a great night and the next day we were heading to Vang Vieng...
On the morning we got on the minibus and it was supposed to be VIP..as in air con etc but it was the most uncomfortable, hot journey ever. The only good thing to come out of that journey was meeting Claire and Dean. They were mates from work in the UK and they were lovely. We were stuck on this pooey bouncey bus for around 5 hours and it was peeing with rain!
