I was awoken by Chris banging on the door at 11 and we headed to a bakery in town for a couple of meat pies. Suitably nourished we decided to give Frisbee golf a go, a free activity in the park. We found the first tee and flung our bits of plastic in turn, with decidedly inconsistent results. The rules are pretty much the same as regular golf except the target is either a particular segment of a tree trunk or a metal basket. As we journeyed around the park, often thankful that a big colourful bit of plastic were decidedly easier to find when thrown errantly than a little white ball, the lead jumped back and forth and we headed into the second last hole with Chris up by a throw. Sadly the pressure seemed to get to the poor chap and his tee shot was disastrous and allowed me to claw back not one but two throws and I headed into the final hole up by one. I have to admit, I tried to play conservatively and was left with a tough shot to win but the chains rattled, the Frisbee dropped in and finally I could taste the sweetness of success on this trip!
We decided that though it had been fun Queenstown is all about the extreme and searched for fellow strays to have a go on the luge at the top of the hill on the edge of the town. We eventually tracked down Jen and Lisa and made for the gondola. En route we ran into Sarah who had just arrived having stayed in Dunedin for an extra day and the five of us headed up the hill. At the top we found the luge, essentially a downhill go-kart type affair, and donned our helmets. There is a small chairlift that takes you to the top of the track, we headed up, were shown how the little vehicles worked, and set off on our way. It is fairly tame by Queenstown standards but we had a lot of fun flying down the track and found them almost impossible to flip, though I came close when I inadvisably tried to put my feet up on the handlebars and lost control at one stage! For the last few laps we decided to try and get some group photos. Each time we stopped just before the camera and posed in various states, standing, turning around and generally larking about. On the last chairlift up Chris and I (ok, mostly I) decided to pose in, shall we say, a compromising pose that suggested we were intimate. It was all great fun and we headed to the photo booth to collect our hilarious pics. Sadly, however, we reached the booth to find that almost all of our photos had been deleted as we were doing things against luge rules. It seems it’s not just the Chinese who have fun police at luge sites (for reference see my last week in China!). To get revenge we walked up the hill and took photos of Chris and I underneath the chairlift doing what we’d now decided was a new sport, ‘extreme b*****y’. That’ll show ‘em!
Later that night Chris and I took advantage of his great setup (his room had its own kitchen) and cooked up a Thai green curry before heading into town with Sarah. We headed to Buffalo’s (claim to fame; wet t-shirt contest on a Thursday) then back to World bar but failed to meet up with any of the rest of the group. We shot the breeze past midnight then headed to bed.
