We left Tobago last week and motored overnight to Trinidad, a 12 hour crossing. There are six of us living on-board, three brits and three yanks. We spent three days in Trinidad filling the boat with supplies for the next two weeks of sailing north along the windward islands.
Our shopping list for the boat involved fourty containers of diesel fuel, fourty drums of water and fourty cases of lager. And some food. It was a 24 hour sail out of Trinidad to our first stop in the Grenadines, a tiny idyllic island called Canouan, population of 600. Sailing for 24 hours was a awesome experience, we were divided up into three teams to do 3 hour watches. Daylight watches involve sunbathing on the deck drinking beer, looking at the sea, and talking. The sea was rough at times and it was nil by mouth for us, apart from fluids. At night the fun really begins, no-one allowed on deck so we all sit in the cockpit. trying to fit in some sleep is an adventure. You get a six hour window of sleep opportunity, however down below is like a sauna because all hatches must remain closed and the engines are running nicely heating the cabins to a temperature not to similar to the sahara desert. Lying in a pool of sweat with the ripe stale air wafting around and throb of the engines makes sleeping a distant dream.
As we sail two fishing lines are trawled out the back of the boat and I have been made head fishing boy on the boat! We caught a Mahi mahi and I cut its head off and pulled its guts out, it was brilliant. Check out the video diary on this blog to see the little fishy. It tasted great as well.
Once we arrived in Canouan, it was like someones birthday when we went ashore, a special occasion which had to be celebrated down the local bar with cocktails and an english fry-up. Thank the lord for an english skipper!
The next day it was back on the sailing and we travelled up to the next island Bequia. spending a few days here exploring the island, goats, beaches and bars. Next stop is the beautiful St. Vincent and then to St. Lucia to watch some football.
