We started our full day in Bergen by taking a city tour on the bus with Neil as our guide. We were told to fasten our seat belts as its a law that if seat belts are provided, they must be fastened in Norway. We first drove along the oldest street, Akvariet, cobblestone of course, and given city history. Highlights included about the meat market established in the Middle Ages to provide safe meat for consumption. The explosion of a German ship that killed many from both sides and blinded many many Norwegians. The leprosy hospital established in the 1800's to help those unfortunate , also called Hansen's disease after the Norwegian who discovered the bacillus. The site where 350 witches were killed, the last being a ministers wife who was said to make her husband ride a horse on Sunday and cursed at a pear tree for not bearing fruit. Knee alley, very narrow bicycle or walking only alley that runs from the top of the city to the fjord. And the excellent reasons for owning an electric car in the city like free parking and big tax advantage.
We then toured Trolhaugen, Grieg's home and favorite place to be.
A walking tour of the old Warehouse District, a UNESCO heritage site.
Lunch followed with fish and chips at the fish market followed along with a visit to the Hanseatic Museum followed by shopping since the other two museums I wanted to visit were closed. Just a ploy I think to get me to buy some Norway yarn. During my wandering around time, I heard drums in the distance and encountered one of the seventeen Boy's Clubs having maneuvers. They gathered by the statue of a boy in the WWII resistance to execute the ceremony for changing their leader for the next year. After it was over they were greeted by friends and family and lots of food treats.
