Paul's Adventures
We left the dragon Youth hostel and headed to Mt Emei Shan to do some trekking..
the journey down only took 2 and a half hours, we booked ourselves into the teddy bear youth Hostel it was very clean and tidy and Andy that's his English name spoke very good English which helped..
We just chilled out in the afternoon, me and Jonas went for a walk around the town is very small so not much to see the main reason people come here is for the mountain..
Mt. Emei is located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province. It is towering, beautiful, old and mysterious. Mt. Emei is like a huge green screen standing in the southwest of the Chengdu Plain. Looking its winding and beautiful figure, you will find that it resembles very much an eyebrow of a girl. It is the highest one among all the famous sight-seeing mountains in China. In Mt. Emei there are four scenic regions: Baoguo Temple, Wannian Temple, Qingyin Pavilion and Golden Summit. Its main peak, the Golden Summit, is 3079.3 meters (10,103 feet) above the sea level, seemingly reaching the sky. Standing on the top of it, you can enjoy the snowy mountains in the west and the vast plain in the east. In addition in Golden Summit there are four spectacles: clouds sea, sunrise, Buddha rays and saint lamps. In 1996 Mt. Emei was enlisted in the world natural and cultural heritage by the UNESCO.
The trees are verdant almost all the year round; the waterfalls are splendid; the whole scenery is beautiful and quiet. The landscape varies according to the seasons, the height of mountain and the climate.
Going into the mountain, you can see continuous ranges of peaks and tall trees covering on them. Water flows swiftly as if it were flying. Birds are singing and pretty butterflies are dancing. In spring, all the creatures are burgeoning and the whole mountain is in a fresh green coat; in summer, beautiful flowers are blooming one after another in a way of competition; in autumn, the entire Mt. Emei is decorated by the red leaves which make the mountain so amazing that it is far beyond your imagination; in winter, it is covered by snow.
So we got up nice and early the next morning so we could have a fall day on the mountain, we took a bus to Wangaxian station this is one of the points where you can start..
So with map in hand we set of, the initial start was nice and flat but we soon came to our first set of stairs, there are stone stairs all the way to the summit these are very well maintained by the workforce employed there..
The first temple you come to is baoguo temple, The Baoguo Temple is the center of Buddhist activities in Mt. Emei. The climate here is mild and trees are verdant and serried. Visiting this temple, you can enjoy either the renowned ancient buildings and precious Buddhist cultural relics or peculiar natural attractions and rare animals and plants.
Facing the east, Baoguo Temple awaits the arrival of the rising sun in the morning and sends off the setting sun in the dusk. In front of the temple gate there is a pair of stone lions carved in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). They are lively, grand and mighty, like door guards protecting the temple as well as the Mt. Emei. A large engraved stone slab hangs above the gate with the name of the temple on it which was written by the Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)
The climb was getting harder as you ascend it gets a lot steeper but the views are spectacular so we would stop for photo's on the way up..we took one route that is roughly 25k to the summit it has monastery's on the way up as well.. after hours of climbing we eventually came across the Elephants bathing pool, unfortunately there are no elephants its just a mystical name..
But there are Monkeys which try and steal things of you so don't let them near your rucksack or they will have stuff out LOL..
They are wild but they will come near you as you will see in my photos i managed to shake a little ones hand Jonas had some great photo's as well..
We carried on up climbing higher and higher it was very hard but we couldn't believe the weight the workers was carrying on there back they was going up and down the mountain with at least 80kg on there back i tried lifting one of the stone steps lying around i struggled just to lift it and these guys just keep going and going...
Anyway after nearly 9 hours of walking we came almost to the summit as it was getting dark we decided we would stay in one of the hotels so after some food a a few beers we hit the sack we was up early to finish the climb to the summit it was very dark so we struggled to find our footing etc but we made it unfortunately because the weather was overcast and very foggy we didn't see the sun rise but at least we had made it to the top..
So now we had to get down we came a different route this was a lot harder they have not fixed the paths yet so they are very tiny and some a eroded so i slipped twice as did Jonas and Minonha..
It took about 8 hours as well but covered around 30km so in total we must have done 60km of walking..
So tired and wet we got back to the hostel quick shower and then beer and food a lovely end to a good couple of days..
