We started off our day beneath the towering peaks of the Alps and finished it under the towering canopies of an avenue of giant redwoods.
Our journey took us through Zus and Lech as we travelled along the Ahlberg pass, turn after turn gave us stupendous views which were absolutely incredible. We travelled for an hour and a half along roads with sweeping bends which climbed up and down through gorges. It was an amazing ride made even more enjoyable by the complete lack of other motorists, there was only a handful on the roads.
As we passed through quintessential chocolate box villages festooned with overflowing window boxes full of geraniums, begonias and sufinas of vibrant, If clashing colours, of reds, purples, yellows and oranges cascading down it was hard not to enjoy the sight.
We were in for a surprise as we came over the border and entered Switzerland, we were expecting to be in Germany, especially as we had travelled alongside the river Rhein! We carried on through picturesque villages of brown and white farm houses surrounded by small amounts of land.
Eventually we saw a sign for Konstanz, so we were heading in the right direction! Our destination was a small town on the outskirts of Konstanz so that we could visit the garden island of Mainau on Lake Constance. Having been disappointed with all the gardens we have visited up to now, due to the high temperatures in the Czech Republic and Italy, we were more than delighted to be in a garden full of colour and scent. We whiled away the afternoon wandering amongst the gardens and trees.
