Mission Beach, Tully & Cardwell
We headed 50kms south from Paronella Park and spent a week at beautiful if slightly cyclone wrecked Mission Beach. We stayed right on the beach which allowed us to spend time walking up or down it each day sometimes as far as eight kilometres. Four kilometres off the beach is Dunk Island which was so devastated by Cyclone Yassi that its world class holiday resort will now be closed until at least 2013.
We also visited nearby Bingil Bay and the sugar cane town of Tully which is one of the wettest spot in Australia. The boot in our photo is 7.9m high which is the highest recorded annual rainfall in the town.
We then headed to Cardwell the first port settlement in North Queensland and a spot where the Bruce Highway passes along the beach front and straight through the main street of the town. Cardwell, Mission Beach, and Tully were all severely damaged by Cyclone Yassi on 3 February 2011 and in all of these areas there were remnants of the devastation it caused.
