We headed north from Mackinaw City towards Lake Superior. Had a nice winding, forested drive along the Superior coast to Munising, where we took a boat tour to the Pictured Rocks. On our 2.5 hour tour along cliffs over 150' tall, we saw rock caves, colourful displays caused by water flowing through the different minerals in the rocks, rock formations of all different shapes (it was fun describing the different ones we saw, because everyone saw the rocks differe...

We took our bikes with us on a ferry to Mackinac Island (same pronunciation as "Mackinaw", this is the French spelling). We started by cycling the 8-mile paved trail around the island, and scouted out some of the sites we wanted to view later. The trail was very flat and picturesque. We took a very pretty drive through the central part of northern Michigan, to Mackinaw City. We cycled through the town, then for a while on a Rails to Trails south of the city. We discovered a Dark Night Sky viewing area, overlooking Lake Michigan, on the west part of Mackinaw. After closing up the boathouse garage, we left Beaverton around 9:30 am. Headed to Cambridge to pick up our new tarp around 1 pm, then made it to Sarnia / Port Huron around 2:30. Drove up the coast of Lake Huron for an hour, then headed to the centre of Michigan. We camped in West Branch, just north of Bay City, right where the "thumb" meets the "palm".
