Today we were headed further north to see what Port Douglas has to offer. Reputedly the haunt of the rich and famous, we wanted a piece of the action. The roads here were precarious to say the least, twisty and turny, steep up followed by steep down, only separated from the rocky coastline by a tin barrier. But how beautiful. Around every corner a new view of where the sea meets the shore.
After a short run in comparison to the miles done yesterday we arrived in Port Douglas. A suitable campsite was identified, Tropic Breeze, just a short walk from town. It didn't take very long to work out we were going to like Port D. Small boutique shops and cafés, bars and plenty of restaurants to choose from later. The climate is different here, much stronger winds keep the beating suns heat at bay. It is so green too, you get a real feel of the Daintree rain forests not too far away.
We headed to 4 Mile beach for a wonder. We didn't make it the full length but we must have strolled for a mile or so. Then, being responsible individuals, it was obviously time to rehydrate. Holly's bottle of cider suggested optimum serving conditions as 'bloody cold' and she was offered a little stubbie to keep it that way. Helen's beer wasn't likely to last long enough to be at risk of warming up.
We headed back to camp to refresh and then hit the town once again. We walked the high street and visited many shops, in search of the elusive 'sun hat' for Holly. We found many nice bric-a-brack shops full of homely ornamentals and a few souvenir shops which all sold genuine Kangaroo testicles in various forms.
After an hour or so spent playing pool in Paddys Irish Bar we identified the old Court House or Courtys for dinner. Well watered and fed, our rock and roll spirits left us and we headed back to the campsite just before the live music started (well it would have been rude to have left after the first song). And then it rained, I know we are in the tropics but this was torrential. Hammering against the camper and because we couldn't open the windows for fear of drowning we slowly started to steam cook in the heat of the camper. Not the most comfortable nights of rest!
