This morning we had a lie in. Yippee! We have been super tired for days and finally had the chance for no alarms so woke up after 9.00! What a luxury! By the time we made it downstairs for breakfast they were serving lunch, oopsie, so we both had an avocado BLT for brunch.
We left the hotel at about 12.00, after booking our shuttle to the airport on Saturday (boo). We jumped on the trolley - the Powell & Hyde car (a must in San Fran) and travelled down to Fisherman's Wharf. The journey resembled some of the roller coasters we rode last week with all the hills! Luckily we had a seat inside rather than hanging on to the outside! Although Claire really wants to hang off the side! We took a slow walk from Fisherman's Wharf round to Pier 33, taking in the sights and looking in some of the shops. It was a beautiful day - sunny and warm in the sun but the wind was chilly.
At Pier 33 we picked up our tickets for our trip to Alcatraz. We had around an hour to spare before our boat departed so grabbed a soda and sat in the sun reading for a while. We did attempt to board an earlier trip but weren't allowed so we had to wait and get in the queue for our 2.40 departure. The sea was quite choppy on the way over but we sat up on the deck and enjoyed the view of San Fran and Alcatraz from the water. Sadly the Golden Gate Bridge was in cloud all day so no view of that. We're hoping it might clear for tomorrow! Getting off the boat was a little tricky as the water was so choppy so I needed a sit down afterwards. Bleugh! Once recovered, we headed up hill towards Alcatraz to pick up our audio tours and headed off around the prison. The audio tours were great and provided loads of interesting information, including details of life in the prison and of the escape attempts. The downside is that people congregate in the same areas and space can get a bit tight. We paused for a while and then carried on in a quieter spot so there were less people around, which made it more enjoyable. The tour was great - definitely recommended.
Luckily the boat trip back to the mainland was a smoother ride. We disembarked and walked back to pier 39 for a sit down and shared an avocado and crackers - our favourite snack! We wandered back round to Pier 39 and picked up the 6pm evening bus tour, a 90 minute tour around the city picking up the main sites. We got to ride upfront which provided a great view but got increasingly chilly. By the end we were freezing!
We could have stayed on the bus for a shuttle back to our hotel but instead we got off and decided to ride the trolley back. We walked to the stop but there was a long queue so we had to wait for four trolleys to depart before we could get on. Normally this wouldn't be a problem but we were freezing and I was desperate for a wee, so had a bit of a sense of humour failure. Eventually we made it back to our hotel room and piled on the layers! We knew the temperature would drop here but the earlier sun had deceived us!
We headed off in search of dinner, not wanting to go too far. We looked at a steak joint around the corner, Mortons, but it cost $125 for a steak... hmmm... so instead we went to Sears, next door to our hotel, and had a delicious meal for half the cost of 1 steak in Mortons! I had lamb and Claire had the ribs. Yum!
Back in our hotel we picked up complimentary cookies (delicious - I could eat them all day) and tea to bring back to our room. Today has been great! I absolutely love San Fran. It is beautiful and so interesting. I'd definitely live here!
