Ru and Bear's Global Escapade
Hello from lovely Laos, our fifth country so far!
We came across from Thailand on a two-day 'slow boat' down the Mekong River. The journey was amazing, with stunning scenery and good company. It was really relaxing to float along, chatting, reading and listening to a few tunes. By the time we reached Luang Prabang, we had made lots of new friends so we had a whole gang of mates to hang out with.
By happy coincidence, we were there during one of the biggest festivals of the Luang Prabang calender so we spent a few hours down by the river, watching boat races, dancing with the locals and sampling the local brew, Beer Laos. We thought the Laos poeple were quite a reserved race but, with the beer flowing as steadily as the Mekong, we saw a whole new side to them! The atmosphere was fantastic and the local people were happy to sweep us up in their celebrations - great fun!
Our next stop was Vang Vieng where we hired inflatable tubes and floated down the river with craggy mountains as a backdrop, picking up a beer here and there at the riverside bars. It was soooo beautiful.
Finally, we visited the capital of Laos, Vientiane, which sadly turned out to be the most boring place on earth. The most excitement we had was when our friend, Merve, found a caterpillar in her enchillada. Enough said!
Having heard horror stories about the bone-shaking, 30 hour bus journey into Vietnam, we decided to treat ourselves to a flight to Hanoi. Check out what happened in the Vietnam postcard....
Bye for now! Lots of love from me and her xx
