Ru and Bear's Global Escapade
We have loads of news from Vietnam so here is our journey, town by town...
Hanoi
Hanoi was great! We loved it. It was colourful and vibrant, bustling at all hours of the day and night. We stayed near a beautiful lake where people peacefully practiced Tai Chi surrounded by about 10 lanes of crazy motorbike drivers. We went to see a traditional water puppet show and got first class seats for one pound twenty - bargain! One morning we dragged ourselves out of bed at 5am and headed to the famous Lin Park to see thousands of locals doing their early morning workout. Yep, they're all completely bonkers, doing aerobics, badminton and ballroom dancing at such an ungodly hour. Bing bong!!
Halong Bay
Next, we took a 4 day tour to Halong Bay which is filled with about 3,000 tiny islands. It was breath-takingly beautiful. The first night we slept on the boat and lay out on the deck listening to Coldplay's 'It's a beautiful world' and gazing at the stars... a magical experience.
Hue
Hue played a big part in the Vietnam war and thousands of people died there. Sobering stuff. We took a boat trip down the river and visited the tomb of Tu Duc (although we're not sure who he was and we didn't see any ducks!).
Hoi An
Hoi An is a little town halfway down the coast of Vietnam. It was absolutely beautiful, with pretty French colonial architecture and lots of lovely lantern-lit cafes along the waterfront. It is famous for its endless streets of expert tailors, who whizz up any item of clothing (including shoes) to fit perfectly in a matter of hours at rock bottom prices. Needless to say, we totally blew the budget. Oops.
Nha Trang
This is a top package-holiday destination with amazing hotels (way out of our budget, mind you) and a gorgeous white sand beach. We didn't do any tourist sights, but our tans are looking great! (Alex and Dan - you'll love it here!) Sadly, we bid farewell to Merve, Jamie and Louise (a new friend) who were on a tighter schedule than us.
Dalat
Next, we headed up into the mountains to Dalat, which we'd heard had lots of beautiful waterfalls and lakes. Saw some waterfalls but not many lakes. When we arrived, we were surprised to find the locals wearing wooly hats and jumpers in the afternoon sunshine. We soon found out why... after sunset it was absolutely freezing! Good job that Claire had those fur-lined boots made in Hoi An! We hooked up with some Dutch friends, hired mopeds and headed out to explore, discovering some beautiful pagodas and a crazy monk.... hmmm.
Mui Ne
Mui Ne was bliss. Heavenly beaches, sandboarding on the dunes, a sea of traditional conical hats at the local fish market, and a wild night out at a Vietnamese nightclub where we were the only Westerners. Boy, was there some crazy dancing that night?!!
Ho Chi Minh City
At first sight, HCMC appeared to be overrun with long-gloved, bandana-clad, female bandits on motorbikes, all heading for one massive road accident. It turned out they were merely trying to avoid getting a suntan whilst out shopping... heaven forbid! We went to a local waterpark and then visited the War Remnants Museum, a moving, shocking and pretty harrowing experience. Later, we had to indulge in some pirate CD retail therapy to cheer ourselves up!
In general, we loved Vietnam. There were beautiful girls on bicycles wearing traditional Ao Dai outfits, yummy street-food stalls with little plastic chairs, old ladies with no teeth wearing conical hats and, of course, heavenly Choco-Pie. Come and take a look for yourself....
More from Cambodia. Much love, the girls xx
