We decided that with being so close to Fraser Island it would be stupid not to go over and see it. We didn't enough money to do what a lot of people do which is to hire a 4wheel drive and cruise around the beaches and tracks and camp the night out there. We had to do Fraser island on the cheap!
We booked onto the Day Trip. Where a boat takes you across for the day and then you spend time at a resort over on the island, enjoying a free lunch and the pool and the beautiful beaches but you don't get to see what the island is famous for - Lake Mckenzie, Ship wrecks, dingos and other weird and wonderful things!
We arrived at about 9.30 and rather than spend the day sun bathing like everyone else we were going to walk the 24km round trip to see Lake Mckenzie on our own! It's amazing how you don't quit realize how unfit you are until you try to do a 24 km work in the boiling sun over hills and on mostly sand! Lake Mckenzie though, was totally worth it! It is a fresh water lake in the middle of the island, the water is fresh enough to drink and it is surrounded by a beautiful beach that has the most amazing sand we have ever seen. It was like snow, in fact Charlotte actually made a sand man. We had a full beach to ourselves where we ate our salmon butties before continuing the walk!
The last 2-3 km of the walk were horrible we just ached everywhere! Really glad we did it though! The evening was spent recoveringat our cabin watching tv and going to bed at about 9!
