Got a taxi this morning to take us to Uncle Tans Wildlife Camp for our jungle adventure!
Before going into the jungle we had stopped off at the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to watch Orangutans in rehabilitation play in the jungle and feed. We saw 5 or 6 in total and they look so cool and happy, from the adult to the baby oragutans. As with everywhere in Borneo it seems, there were also some cheeky long tailed macaques - about 30 of them who stole all the orangutans food and then came to the viewing platform to try and steal tourists bags and cameras!
At about lunch time we were taken to Uncle Tans HQs for some free lunch and to meet the rest of our group. There were about 20 of us in total.
After eating we were then squeezed into a very hot minivan and taken to the river where we were then transferred by boat to camp. The boat ride was funwith our driver pointing out loads of animals - mainly macaques and a couple of birds.
After about an hour down the river we were in the heart of the jungle and finally docked at a little jetty where we made our way down a narrow and very muddy trail for 400m with our backpacks on!
We were then shown to our suite by the bell boy and left to pick which thin. tatty, damp mattress on the floor was going to be ours for the next 3 days. Our hut consisted of no electricity, no doors or windows, just metal caging, which we had to share with 2 other couples also lying on the floor, a rat and a few mozzies!
We had a delicious tea whilst getting to know everyone and at 9pm we were taken on our first night safari down the river. We saw crocodiles, a few more birds, sleeping monkeys in trees, a wild cat and again some more mozzies.
It was one of the staff's birthday when we got back so we were all invited to thrie very small living quarters for a party. There were probably about 30 of us all squeezes into a very small room drinking beers and singing songs, including 'in the jungle...'
We got to bed about 1ish and attempted to sleep in the cramped sweatbox until about 3am when we had to get up to investigate a rat rustling in the room around some pringles.
After not being able to find the the little creature we then got an hours sleep until the thunder and lightening bolts woke us up and kept us awake until it was time to get up.
