The longest day of driving. 8 1/2 hours of it. It started early with breakfast being provided and we headed south out of El Paso, following the river and the border with Mexico. We were again amazed with the number of trucks on the road, and I have no idea how many we have passed. The scenery started off bare enough; scrub on both sides, with a small patch of greenery attached to the river. However, once we turned east we started more into hills and then started to see plantations worth of cotton. It also seemed a lot greener the closer we got to Dallas, although this was interspersed with oil pumps and refineries.
The one good discovery of today was a restaurant called McAllisters, which served sandwiches, salads and soups. The one in the photo was their Reuben, which wasn’t bad. Matt got a BLT+A, and Sue and Katie got HUGE salads. Definitely worth a visit.
The entrance to Dallas reminds me partly of Canada but at the same time is radically different. The similarity is the amount of water around; there are numerous lakes and patches of swamps on both sides of the road. On the flip side, the ridiculous road system leaves muc( to be desired. To get from the west side of Dallas to the east it seems as if you have to go east, south east, south, eastish, north, north east, south, a bit more east, north again and finally east. The number of times the GPS got confused with itself was troubling and we arrived at our hotel with myself being worn out. Dinner was a quick bite from the hotel bar.
