Cindy Aserkoff's Travels
We started the day by visiting a paper factory. The paper was magnificent. We did purchase some souvenirs there. Today was kind of a lazy day spent going down the Mekong river to the cave of the Buddhas. We saw life along the river, washing clothes, bathing, and cooking. Water buffalo could be spotted along the shore as well as elephant rides. It is very easy to imagine soldiers coming down the mountains and crossing the Mekong river. The war of our youth we protested and now we are here as tourists. Lunch was served on the boat and cooked by the wife of the captain. It was excellent and different from what we have had. Upon return we walked to the kings palace with many Buddhas displayed. The Laotian Buddhas are thin, very svelte. The place was impressive but not nearly as lavish as the one in Bangkok. Tomorrow is a leisurely morning and then an airplane ride to Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The Laotian people are extremely warm and inviting. It is nice to hear when they thank you for coming to visit their country.
