After our day at the zoo, we were up again early the next day for a trip to Fraser Island. We were picked up from the hostel by our guide, Tim, at 5.45am (!), and after picking up some other daytrippers we drove along the inland route to Rainbow Beach. We were pretty lucky because as it was really early, the wildlife was out and about - we saw a kangaroo and our first ever wild dingo! Once we got to the barge to take us over to Fraser Island from Inskip Point, we also saw quite a few Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, so we were really happy before we even got to the island! To start our tour we headed along the inland mining track, which was super bumpy, before getting out onto 75 mile beach to drive along the sand. We then headed back inland until we got to an area in the rainforest, where we stopped for coffee and biscuits before going on a quick walk into the forest - some of the trees were absolutely huge, 50+ metres tall! It had started to drizzle at this point, so Joel and I got out our $1.50 ponchos, and looked pretty cool! Luckily the rain didn't last long, and by the time we had got to Lake McKenzie it had stopped. The lake was absolutely huge, and the water was crystal clear - we stopped here for an hour or so, having a long swim in the lake before heading up to the picnic area for our lunch, BBQ with free wine and beer, excellent! We didn't hang around too long after lunch as there was still loads to see. Next up we got back onto the beach and drove up to see the wreck of the SS Maheno, a ship the crashed into the island in 1935. There isn't that much of it left now, but it was really cool to see - you can even see some of the original wood flooring, which dates from around 1900. Next up we drove a little further up the beach to see the coloured sands of the Pinnacles - there were so many different shades of red, yellow and orange, and the sand gets shaped constantly by the weather. After we'd taken lots of photos we headed south along the beach and stopped off for more drinks and snacks at Eli Creek - it's a fresh water creek that flows constantly from the centre of the island out to sea. We had a bit of a paddle but the water was pretty cold! At this point the weather, which had been fairly nice all day, finally turned and the rain that had been forecast finally made an appearance. It was time to head back to the barge anyway, so we drove back along the beach, spotting a sea eagle along the way as well as loads of other sea birds. Back on the mainland we took a different route back to Noosa - driving 40+ miles along Rainbow Beach, and then getting a barge across the Noosa River to get back into town. It was a really great day, and we managed to see pretty much everything on the island that we had wanted to.
