We spent a week in Melbourne and, so far, it is the best city that we have visited. It's quite busy - 4 million people live there - but there is so much going on and so much to see, it has a really great feel to it. On our first full day we left the car at our hotel and took a tram into the CBD to explore. We started at Federation Square, which isn't actually a square shape, where there were loads of outdoor cafes and a screen showing the tennis - it had a really European feel. We then headed up to the Queen Victoria Markets to have a look around, they were huge and full of all sorts of fresh produce as well as clothes/souvenirs and lots of cafes to eat at. For the rest of the afternoon we wandered around Flagstaff Gardens, next to the markets, had a look at Parliament House and then wandered around Bourke Street Mall, the main shopping area, as well as The Block and The Royal Arcade, which are 19th century shopping areas with really great architecture. We were pretty tired by this time so we took a tram back to Flinders Street Station and then headed back to the hotel. The next day we were off to watch tennis at the Australian Open - we had bought ground passes which let us go to all of the outside courts as well as Hisesnse Arean. We started at the arena watching Sara Errani play Yamina Winkmayer - we got in there pretty early so we had front row seats for the match! We then headed outside to support Heather Watson in her second round doubles match, before heading back to the arena to try to watch Andy Murray - unfortunately it was full so we couldn't get back in, so instead we watched the match on one of the big screens outside. Later we watched another doubles match, but we did get to see Nick Kygrios (Australian up and coming player), Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal practising, which was pretty awesome! For our third day we headed back into the CBD to go to the Eureka Tower on the Southbank - we went up to the 88th floor of the tower and got some amazing views over the city, down to the beach and out to the mountains beyond the city. When we were back at sea level we headed across the river to the CBD and stopped off at the Lindt Cafe for lunch - the food was amazing! When we'd had our fill of chocolate we walked up through Hosier Lane, which is full of some of the best grafitti art in the city, and went to wander around China Town and the Greek Precinct before heading to the State Library of Victoria to see Ned Kelly's armour. Our last stop for the day was the Ian Potter Centre, where we saw some really good indigenous art. Our day wasn't quite over though, as when we stopped off at the supermarket on our way back to the hotel, we saw Sheila from Neighbours! I followed her around the shop, but I don't think she noticed! (I hope!). The next day it was a bit cooler and fairly windy, but we decided to head down to St Kilda anyway to have a look at the beach. When we got there we wandered around a really good little market along the sea front before stopping off at a kiosk for fish and chips, and going for a walk along the pier. In the afternoon we went back into the city and visited the Shrine of Remembrance, which had some really good views over the city, and then we went for a walk around the Royal Botanic Gardens, which were really pretty. Monday was Australia Day, so we went into the city to celebrate. We started off at Flinders Street watching the Austrlia Day Parade, and once that was finished we went south of the river to Kings Domain Gardens to look at some classic cars and grab a bite to eat. In the afternoon we headed up to Docklands, where there was a market as well as music and entertainment, and in the evening we watched the fireworks display over the river which was absolutely amazing! Our last day in Melbourne was the day I have been waiting for forever - it was finally time to go on a tour of the set of Neighbours! We started off by going to the studio where it is filmed - we got to see some of the outdoor sets like the mechanics and Dial-a-Kyle, and then we got to meet Saskia Hampele who plays Georgia! We had time for questions, as well as photos and autographs, she was really nice! After she went back to filming we headed off to Ramsay Street (Pin Oak Court), which is actually much smaller in real life! After the tour we were dropped off in the city, so we spent the rest of our final day having coffee and cake in a cafe in one of the side streets. It was a bit of a shame to leave Melbourne, we would love to come back!
