This morning I decided to have a pramble around the centre of San Salvador. It was a market day so the streets were packed with market sellers, as well as open sewers and homeless people...
Yeah San Salvador is horrible. Like, really, really bad.
But at least I finished on a couple intriguing things.
First up was a military parade, or rather, a load of soldiers sat round a carpet whilst a couple other soldiers walked some men in suits with a wreath around their necks - in front of what I presume was the presidential palace. Most of the local Salvadorans couldn't give a toss and it seemed hardly anyone was there to watch the show. In Ecuador, the president gets a packed out square every time he walks out...
The last thing I did in San Salvador was eat some Bao Bao. These were dumplings - 1 with dulce de leche and the other pork, from a little food court in the top of a, mercifully, air-conditioned mall.
And with that I was off to the coast!
In El Salvador the buses are much harder to work out than in South America as because its such a small country, intercity buses are the same as buses that just go round the same city. So it was another ex-school bus, picked up by the side of the street rather than a bus terminal, to get to La Libertad.
La Libertad is a grotty, grimey port city so isn't where I'm staying, but instead I'm basing my final night in El Salvador in the surfing mecca of El Tunco. It even brought surfers during the civil war!
The town is obviously touristic, and a bit of a price hike, but at the same time it's still very mellow although the beach is a bit disappointing. I'm mainly here as its the easiest place to get a transfer to Honduras, although I'm a tad worried about my company...
Still, hope it all works out so..
Vamos!
